3 Tips on Helping Elders Enjoy Holidays

The holidays are a time when the entire family comes together. This is also the perfect time to check on the physical or mental well being of older relatives when they come over to visit from nursing homes for the holidays. If you are having older friends or family come over for the holidays, spend some time planning ahead to make their visit comfortable.

Here is a list of 3 tips to help your older relatives have an enjoyable holiday!

1) Prepare your home

Be weary of rearranging furniture. Simple changes can cause confusion or anxiety in seniors. Eliminate obstacles that may make it difficult to move around. Remove slippery rugs that could cause falls. It is also advised that you keep a quiet area available  where older family members can go to have a break.

2) Plan inclusive activities

Older family or friends whose memories are impaired might have problems recalling more recent events. To include them in the conversation, you can suggest that they talk about the past. You can use old photos, family videos, or music to help them recall the past.

3) Alcohol and Medicine

Even though the holiday season can be chaotic, it is important to encourage elderly relatives to stick to their regular medication schedule. It is also important to remind your older family and friends about the type of negative effects that alcohol consumption can have when mixed with certain medications.

5 Common Myths About Breast Cancer

It is expected that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. During this time, Millennium Medical Group encourages everyone to educate themselves and the people around them about breast cancer.

Myth 1: Men can’t get breast cancer.breast-cancer-awareness

Men are 100 times less likely than women to develop breast cancer. Yet, there are over 2,000 men each year who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Myth 2: Only women with a family history can develop breast cancer and that your father’s family history does not matter.

Did you know that 70 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer had no identifiable risk factors?  The history of  breast cancer on your father’s side is just as important as your mother’s in determining your chances of developing breast cancer.

Myth 3: It is impossible to get breast cancer after getting a mastectomy.

Getting a mastectomy reduces the chances of someone developing breast cancer by an average of 90 percent. There is not a preventative measure that can cause someone to never get breast cancer.

Myth 4: There is nothing that you can do to decrease your chances of breast cancer. You can only just check for the signs.

Making lifestyle changes can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. Making small changes such as getting regular exercise, reducing alcohol consumption, losing weight , or getting regular screenings can help reduce your risk.

Myth 5: Women with fibrocystic breasts have a greater chance of developing breast cancer.

There is no known connection between fibrocystic breasts and the development of breast cancer. It may be more difficult to differentiate between normal and cancerous tissues. Women with fibrocystic breast normally follow their mammogram with an ultrasound.

Recognize the signs:

  • Nipple tenderness
  • Lump development
  • Change in texture or enlargement of pores
  • Change in the size or shape of nipple
  • Swelling or shrinkage in breast size
  • Nipples appearing inward or inverted
  • Clear discharge or bloody discharge

Share this information with others in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. Schedule your appointment for a mammogram with Millennium Medical Group today in Michigan.

Staph Infection Scare

Are you concerned that you may have a staph infection? Are you embarrassed, or believe it’s just a cut that won’t heal or a rash that won’t go away? Think again. Although most staph infections may not be severe, you still want to seek medical attention. Staph infection can become deadly if not properly treated, by entering your bloodstream or organs.
A client came in concerned about a cut on her stomach, she was shaving her underarms and dropped the razor. The cut wasn’t healing well and her skin around it became red and swollen, after another day she had small boils. It’s also very common to experience pain and develop a fever as well. She thought it was just an infection and called us to get an antibiotic called in to her pharmacy. Luckily our doctor had her come in to see the wound, one look and we knew what it was, antibiotics from a cold will not heal this infection. This infection is getting more immune to antibiotics over time, you’ll need a much more potent antibiotic so make sure you contact our doctors.
Staph infections come in all shapes and sizes, and can cause skin infections such as, boils, impetigo, cellulitis, staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, bacteremia, toxic shock syndrome, and/or septic arthritis. Some of these symptoms are contagious from person to person and can transmit the staph bacteria from one to the other. It is very important that you get checked out to make sure your case is not more severe and that you are not spreading bacteria that you may not know is there.
If you believe you have a staph infection, or want to make sure it is nothing more severe, Milliennium Medical Group will ease your mind. Call to schedule your appointment, and meet with a board certified doctor to discuss symptoms and possible treatments for your medical needs.
