When you hear the word “Ultrasound Diagnostic Testing” what’s the first word that comes to mind? Probably pregnancy right? Well, in this case, there are many different variations of ultrasound testing. The diagnostic testing for ultrasounds includes breast, chest, renal, thyroid, carotid, abdomen, bladder, pelvic, and prostate.
An ultrasound is not only made for women. Ultrasound Diagnostic Testing can be done on both male and female. Males tend to get a pelvic ultrasound on their rectal area. Normally, an ultrasound can take between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the type of scan. Radiation is not involved in an ultrasound examination. Benefits from getting an ultrasound are that it’s quick, easy, and painless.
No special preparation is really needed for an ultrasound. Although, wearing comfortable clothing to your appointment is helpful. Women who are pregnant are usually asked to drink several glasses of water prior to the scan and to come on a full bladder for an ultrasound test. This helps improve the view of the uterus.
Once you arrive to your Ultrasound Diagnostic Testing, you’ll be asked to change out of your clothes and into a gown. Then a technician will come in and will probably ask you to lie down on a bed or table for your scanning. A clear, water-based conducting gel will then be applied to your skin over the area being examined. This is done to receive good contact as the transducer is passed back and forth.
During the ultrasound procedure, you’ll probably be able to view the ultrasound images on the screen attached to the scanner. The diagnostic machine sends out high-frequency sound waves, which reflect off body structures. It makes it useful when examining fluid-filled organs especially when a woman is pregnant. After your 10-30 minute appointment is completed, your normal activities and daily routines can be resumed. With ultrasounds being safe and painless, there is little risk of being harmed.
